Dekakst A way to "build" your own Download would be nice. For example, have all video / audio / subbing tracks prepared ahead of time and available separately for a movie, then offer the user an interface to choose which tracks to use in the download and then use something like ffmpeg to map all chosen tracks with -c copy together in the preferred container format like mkv/mp4. Maybe offer additional flags like "ps5 compatible" which locks container in as webm/mp4/mkv/ with then only allowing certain codecs for certain containers, like vp9+opus for webm and aac+h264 for mkv/mp4.
u2jedi MKV is just the container. Availability of x265 would be nice for faster PCs. It makes a big difference when it comes to 2160p compression size. <br />
Xyz00777 Would be awesome if you could provide it in every available language (sub and audio) and the video would be best in h264 (or better sayed in original source).

Andtha As always, please include as much as you can. It should not matter in file size (download size) to include subtitles in all languages where they are available, but it could be beneficial to have separate downloads for audio...

Waldschatten MKV H265 DTS is what I backup my discs as, being able to buy digital copies in the same (or as similar as possible while remaining open which is always a plus for something like this) format would be nice... <br /> <br /> Of course they'd have to get more than a few YouTube series I saw year ago and some indie films that were pretty good but not really all that rewatchable.
sanscript Agree with CrystalGamma. MKV is the only container that actually allows for *unlimited* amounts of video-, audio-, and subtitles-streams. That and it is libre. Containers and media codecs are not the same.

Wow. <br /> <br /> Besides every PC it plays well on the last three cellphones I used, my Tablet, my by now ancient WD TV, my Raspberry Pi, even my 2005-ish first generation XBox with XBox media center. <br /> <br /> It's just one of the most tested and widespread container formats that plays on virtually everything AND offers all features one could wish for.
iamale Here's the deal: make _multiple_ formats available to download (e. g. english MP4, user's language MP4 and MKV with both audio tracks and also subs). This way, everybody would be happy (but it can be quite difficult to implement)

Sarang Shmerl, giving anyone Lossy is a slap in the fact if you have the space for Lossless. You can say people can't tell the difference but as far as I'm concerned you should record for the top audiophile so since when he/she is happy everyone will be happy.

Redfern There is no OGG video container, there is OGM. <br /> BUT, OGM is inferior to MKV anyway.
MMime On a decent computer, it takes less than 2 minutes to remux 4h of film while storing the same film in multiple containers is expensive. Maybe GOG could provide a JS app to do that but providing it by default seems like a solution to a non-problem.
fragle To be honest, I can't think of a major reason for GOG to support alternative containers. Their compatibility is lower across the board, space savings would probably be like 5MB per movie and truly, if a person is smart enough to know the differences between MP4 and MKV, they are already smart enough to convert container formats after they download the thing; it takes like 30 seconds per file, tops. <br /> <br /> That said, openness does sound like a reasonable angle, in which case WebM is probably the most likely option. But again, this would only be relevant to a very small amount of people, much smaller than the linux crowd even, and support for that took ages to arrive on the games side. So I wouldn't hold my breath..
Juhaaa I'm not buying any movies unless they have subs for my language. Gog should really consider adding subs for all possible languages.
toon_ Better than all is use only free and open codec (Theora,Vorbis,VP8 etc.) and MKV or OGG container. Pleas don't use H.264 or other non free codec due to usage restrictions and patent claims. I must remind that, not only organization vulnerable for that things, viewers vulnerable too. akedomo New to the site here, but thought i'd jump in. <br /> <br /> .MKV is definitely the way to go. It allows for maximum quality, and minimum file size when using the H.264 codec. In addition to easy to use subtitles. It is a massive space/bandwidth saver to use this so long as the files are encoded properly. <br /> <br /> The only other file type that should be included is .MP4, Reason being is that it's more universal. Runs on older machines better(like XP).
d2t I havent tried all the movies but they seem to be in MP4 and with multiple subtitle streams (not sure about audio but MP4 supports that)... Therefore what's the point of this wish if it's already like that?

Libelsema @shmerl I don't think that lossless audio would be useless. Most of today's popular lossy codecs were invented in a time where PC's had the disk space of nowadays Smartphones. I think offering a version of the video with lossless audio wouldn't be that big deal. Much videos on YouTube have over 20 different versions. <br /> <br /> And about the link you posted: It's not about the fact that lossless audio doesn't make sense. It's about the fact that audio with a higher sample rate than 48 kHz and a higher bit depth than 16 Bit doesn't make sense. Lossless audio actually is under the headline of what would make sense. <br />

Staredown This really is nonoptional. Any digital movie I buy online has to have both subs and multiple audio languages. (Ideally this would also include little localization details, like Captain America's different lists depending on what region you bought/saw Winter Soldier in, but now I'm just being greedy.) <br /> <br /> Really, these features are every bit as important as DRM-free.
shmerl Standalone players and such are usually dragging their support for formats, coming the last to support anything new. So may be measuring the choice of formats by them is a bad idea since it will hold GOG off from using better technology.
shmerl I personally wouldn't care about TVs and standalone players, I'm using computers for video. But for others it can be useful.

Video eats tons of disk space, so multiply that by the number of formats you support and you'll get the idea of the increased cost. <br /> <br /> Using lossless audio can have two reasons: <br /> <br /> 1. You want to preserve the master file for further processing (reencoding, noise editing, whatever). <br /> 2. You have no high quality lossy encoder which makes lossy audio indistinguishable from the lossless. <br /> <br /> If you are talking about #2, it shouldn't be an issue. fomo Agreed on the multi audio and subs option, but the used format / encode should also be compatible with TVs and standalone players. OGG is not compatible/supported, the same goes for FLAC.
FlamingFirewire The only reason why I considered FLAC: when looking at the use of that digital file as a 1:1 replacement for a BD. Instead of buying the BD version of the film you could have access to the digital file allowing you to have lossless audio quality without having to use a BD. I do understand the inherent weirdness of having lossy video with lossless audio though. <br /> <br /> When considering the need for a video that can stream, I'm sure GOG could just use one file for DL purposes and a different file on their servers that is streamable though - couldn't they?
